This depends on a person's age.

For me as a millennial, the exposure to a variety of genres started with access to unlimited high-speed internet. Before that point it was limited to what I saw on TV or what was available in the music show.

After it took me around 6-7 years to browse the majority of genres and to find what is the best. Currently I listen to genre-specific online radios to pick some songs I haven't heard before, which is quite rare.

As for younger generations, it doesn't seem strange to me that 13-year-olds define their taste.
