How to Make Friends When School and University Are Over 🍀
This might seem like an odd post for a data visualization blog, but I thought it was important to share.
Over the past couple of years, my wonderful friends have spread out so much that it's become really difficult to meet in person. And as an extrovert, I really need to chat with someone face-to-face. So if you also feel bored and lonely, maybe this will help you.
WHERE TO LOOK?
💬 Communities
For me, data communities have been a lifesaver because, to some extent, they serve as a filter: you will definitely find something to talk about. These are not completely random people, but individuals with similar interests, making it much easier to connect. Communities that I like:
Women in Data Viz (ladies, join Slack right away)
Data Visualization Society (join Slack right away)
DataFam – through tags on Twitter and LinkedIn, Tableau Community
Flowers and Numbers – a fresh data art chat in Russian
🎓 Alumni Chats
If you attended a large university, there's a good chance there’s an alumni chat.
🎉 Meetups and Conferences
Most of these communities regularly hold meetups or share event information. Try to find a Tableau User Group in your country or a couple of conferences. You can also search for events on Eventbrite.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Don’t be afraid!
Reach out to people directly. This is the internet; even if they don’t respond, it’s no big deal. I looked for people in specific locations and messaged them directly. And I was lucky enough to find not just acquaintances but real friends, which makes me incredibly happy.
Post in chats, suggesting meetups from #randomcoffee to #randombeer.
How to Maintain Contact?
Honestly, I’ve met with a lot more people than I currently keep in touch with. It all depends on your first meeting. But I recommend not being shy and reaching out again after your first meeting. And just be nice :)
Communicate and make friends! This is the best thing you can do for yourself because the people around you will make you better! 💜
It's so true!! ❤️❤️❤️
